We use this newsletter for a lot of different things. Sometimes we spread health information that is important. Sometimes we like to tell stories about our patients. This week we are going to do both!

On Monday morning, I saw a new patient. Let's call this new patient Jack. He was coming to see me because he had been dealing with neck and upper back pain for several weeks, but had some previous episodes in the past. Jack chose to come to our office after reading the Google Reviews that our patients left! (Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to write a review for us! If you haven't yet... Here is a link if you would like to - LINK)

Back to our story... Jack was clearly in our office to treat his pain, but after looking through his health history, our conversation quickly turned to discussing his recent weight loss. He had dropped about 15-20 lbs over the past 3 months. He lost that weight through making some significant dietary changes.

Jack told me that he had been diagnosed with diabetes about 10 years earlier. He noted that he has been struggling with controlling his blood sugar ever since his diagnosis. Jack took medication and tracked his blood sugar on a daily basis. He even limited his carbohydrate intake, like his doctor advised. However, it did not seem to be keeping his blood sugar levels under control. To be honest, he realized that he did not really understand how it all worked. He didn't know how different carbohydrates impacted his blood sugar levels. He didn't understand how diabetes worked.

After 10 years of following the advice that his endocrinologist had been giving him, Jack decided that he needed to make a change. He drastically changed his diet. Did his endocrinologist recommend these changes? No. Jack did the research. Jack learned how diabetes works. Jack made the changes. Jack did the work. Intermittent fasting and the ketogenic diet seems to be working for him. He has lost the weight (and continues to lose weight) and his blood sugar levels are much more stable than they have been in years.

Was this easy for him? NOT AT ALL! But sometimes taking the easy path (small dietary changes and medication) is not always the best path.

I don't want you to read this story and think that I am saying that we should ignore medical advice and do what it says we should do on the internet, but in this case taking the time to do some research and making these significant changes to his diet drastically changed one man's life!
