What is essential?

A couple of months ago I read a book called Essentialism, by Greg McKeown. The premise of the book resonated with me. It spoke about the need to focus on that which is necessary in our lives, and spend less time fretting over the things of little significance. Recently I stumbled across a quote from McKeown, that was shared during an episode of the Tim Ferris podcast. In the middle of a conversation, he said -

"If you focus on what you have, you gain what you lack. And if you focus on what you lack, you lose what you have."

This concept has so many applications in life. Think about it for a second. We have all fallen prey to this idea at one point in time or another.

This quote brought me back to our focus on gratitude. We must appreciate the things that we have in life. It is very easy to envy what others have. However, you cannot spend all of your time focusing on and pursuing those things, because your pursuit of those things may cause you to lose the things that you value most in your life. It isn't worth it!

Once you know what is essential in your life, your decision-making process becomes much easier!  Focus on what is important to you and always chose that!
